Interview: David Boies on the fight for gay marriage
The religious homophobes and bigots among us have made opposition to Gay marriage, adoption, and in some cases, even employment one of their stands for segregating out “the other.” In their world there must be a stereotypical other to hate to make them feel better about themselves, or an other to fear to justify repression. It goes beyond reason to emotion, and it goes beyond emotion to bias systems selected for during our specie’s social evolution which are being powerfully manipulated and misapplied against an extreme minority in our country. Gay civil rights is the defining civil rights issue in our country this century.
From the Salon Interview with David Boies who will end up arguing eventually in front of the Supreme Court in favor of Gay Marriage:
You’ve said that a good lawyer must objectively understand his opponent’s argument to be successful. In the case of gay marriage, what exactly is your opponent’s argument?
Well, a good lawyer has got to understand his opponent’s argument to the extent that there is one. I think that this case is probably the case in which my opponent has had less of an argument than in any case that I can think of. They have essentially a slogan, a bumper sticker, a tautology: They say “marriage is between a man and a woman.” That’s the question. That’s not the answer. And they don’t have any reasons why that ought to be the answer.
